Dagshai is one of the oldest cantonment towns in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated on top of a 5689 feet (1734 mtr) high hillock that stands sphinx-like astride the Kalka-Shimla Highway at a point about 11 km from Solan. It was founded in 1847 by the East India Company by securing free of cost five villages from Maharaja of Patiala aka Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The name of these villages were Dabbi, Badhtiala, Chunawad, Jawag and Dagshai. The new cantonment was named after the last named village, as it was the largest and most strategically located.

The name Dagshai, according to a popular local legend was derived from Daag-e-Shahi. During the Moghul times a Daag-e-Shahi (royal mark) was put on the forehead of the criminals and sent packing to the then Dagshai village.At present total area of the cantonment is 821.7793  acres. As per census of 2011 the total population of the Cantonment is 2,904. Dagshai Cantonment Board is categorized as Class III Cantonment and comprises of 12 members giving an equal representation to Elected and official members.


Dagshai is situated on the hilly terrains of Himalayan Ranges in Himachal Pradesh. It is placed in middle of high souring mountains in the green vegetation of Solan district. Its climatic condition remains adequate throughout the calendar year. Its summer temperature ranges between 20 – 30 degree and winter temperature goes low up to 2 degree Celsius.

The Dagshai Cantonment was established by the British in 1847. It is 64 km from Shimla, 60 km from Chandigarh, and 90 km from Ambala Cantt (Haryana), an important Railway Junction of North India and lies at a height of 1,734 metres (5689 ft).The town is a health resort, having an elevation of 1,900 metres above sea level. Total area of Dagshai cantonment is 821.7793 Acre.

The Cantonment Board has been entrusted with several crucial municipal functions such as street light, building activity regulation, water supply, sanitation, health, primary education, public safety and town planning. Apart from these regulatory functions, Cantonment Board also undertakes several additional measures under public improvement schemes and constantly endeavors to achieve excellence and upgrade the quality of services being provided to the general public. Dagshai Cantonment Board has traveled a long way in accepting the challenges posed by increasing pressure on civic amenities and is making constant efforts to improve the quality of life and provide the best quality of services.
